5 Common Myths to Avoid While Deciding Which Stream to Choose in College

Students entering college are often plagued with several questions, but one of the most common ones is “How do I choose my major?” This is because students everywhere tend to believe that their major will determine their future. This is not true!

According to a survey done by Ohio University, a minimum of 50-75% of students change their major before earning a degree. Besides, with the introduction of technology, you can opt to take JEE online classes or learn how to crack NEET, while doing a full-time course. The world is your oyster, my friend.

To help you further, we have listed 5 myths that every student should know before making the big decision:

  • The stream in college will decide your career:

It sounds logical but holds very little truth. Remember, you can always switch to a field that incites you. Your major will not lock your career. A recent study has shown that only 27% of college graduates work in a career related to their stream.

  • Only STEM Graduates earn enough money:

Get used to people calling you a STEM graduate if you hold a major in either Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. One of the biggest myths circling the minds of students is that a profession in STEM pays you the most. The rest of the jobs stand mediocre when compared. This is not true. Remember, money is just a compensation for your hard work and talent. You’ll earn equally well if you decide to be an economist or a writer.

  • You need to decide a stream way before joining college:

Again, not true. A lot of students remain in a dilemma when it comes to choosing a stream. At this point, it is important that you opt for proper consultation and advice. Explore as much as you can. Match your interests with different course outlines and see if it serves you well. Do not invest three to four years of hard work into something that has no future.

  • Your stream will give you experience:

Of course, your stream will give you a lot of knowledge, but practical experience helps you in real life. If you want to build a career in something not related to your stream, research about it first. Once you’re confident, make a proper plan and start gaining practical knowledge. Internships and online training courses are the best in this case.

  • Choose a stream that people call safe:

The concept of a ‘safe stream’ has done more harm than good. Students who follow this terminology blindly, end up clueless at a certain point in time. If you wish to be a writer, choosing the science stream will not add to your theoretical experience in any way. Believe in yourself and go for where your passion lies. And as you build your base, create your safe zone.

While taking important decisions, maintain a safe distance from any kind of pressure. Be it from family, friends or the society in general. Your choices will affect your life the most and you must be accountable for it. Explore, talk to more people, consider advice, but take the final decision by yourself.
